What does Empower do?
Empower is a Riftbound keyword on units, gear and Legends. You pay the cost printed after it and the card becomes Empowered, which switches on its Empowered text, such as extra Might or a new keyword. The card stays Empowered until it leaves the board or is disempowered.

Most cards in Riftbound: the League of Legends trading card game do what their text says from the moment they are played. A card with the keyword Empower has a second stage. Once it is on the board, you can pay a cost to upgrade it, and from then on its Empowered text works as well. Empower came into the game with Vendetta, the fourth set, released on 31 July 2026, and Riot's rules notes for that set call it the set's central mechanic.
What happens when you Empower a card?
You pay the cost written after the word Empower, and the card becomes Empowered. The Core Rules call Empower an activated ability that can be used only while the card is not already Empowered. Empowered is a status, like exhausted, and on its own it does nothing. What counts is the text on the card that begins with Empowered, which works for as long as the card has the status.
Shadow Fiend is a 2 Energy Fury unit with 2 Might. For 2 Energy and one Fury Power it becomes Empowered and has Assault 3, so it attacks with 5 Might. Steel Paws costs only 1 Energy and has 0 Might, but once you pay 7 Energy to Empower it, it has +7 Might. Apprentice Mage gets +1 Might, and when it becomes Empowered it also triggers Predict 2, which lets you look at the top two cards of your Main Deck and recycle any of them.
What can an Empower cost be?
Most Empower costs are Energy, often with one or two Power, but the rules allow costs of any kind. Punching Poro asks you to discard a card, Escaped Grayback asks you to kill a friendly unit, and the gear Questionable Tome only asks you to exhaust it. Legion Marauder lets you choose between 1 Energy and one Body Power.
Some costs change during the game. Frostcoat Mother has an Empower cost of 12 Energy that costs 1 less for each rune you control, so with eight runes it costs 4. The battlefield Risen Altar makes the Empower costs of your units there 1 Energy or one Power cheaper.
When can you Empower a card?
You can use Empower at the same times as any other activated ability without Action or Reaction: in your own Main Phase, while no showdown is going on and nothing waits on the Chain. Empower goes on the Chain like other activated abilities, so your opponent can answer it with a Reaction before the card becomes Empowered.
A unit does not need to be ready to use Empower unless the cost asks you to exhaust it. You can play Shadow Fiend and Empower it in the same turn if you have the runes for both, or play it early and Empower it on a later turn, when you have Energy to spare. Since Empower cannot be used once a showdown has begun, Empower a unit before you move it to a battlefield where it will fight.
Effects can still Empower a card at other times. Sanction, a Calm spell with Reaction, can Empower a unit even in the middle of a fight, and it disempowers that unit at the end of the turn.
How long does a card stay Empowered?
A card stays Empowered until it leaves the board or is disempowered. The status does not wear off at the end of the turn, and moving between your base and a battlefield does not remove it. When an Empowered unit dies or returns to your hand, the status is gone, and a card played again has to be Empowered again.
A card can be Empowered only once, and an effect that would Empower a card that is already Empowered does nothing. Kayle, Justified is the exception. She can be Empowered up to three times and has +2 Might for each time, and once she is Empowered three times, she also has Deflect 3 and Ganking. Disempowering her removes one of the three.
To keep track, lay a marker on each Empowered card. Vendetta's Showdown Decks come with double-sided tokens that have an Empowered side for this purpose.
Can a card become Empowered without paying for Empower?
Yes. Players can only Empower a card when a card tells them to, and several cards do it without the keyword. Mournful Witness becomes Empowered when a combat it was in ends, and Renekton, Brute becomes Empowered when his Might reaches 10 or more. Master of Shadows, the Legend of Zed, Empowers itself whenever you banish a card you own.
Abilities that trigger when a card becomes Empowered work whichever way it happened. Mel, Defiant Soul banishes an enemy unit at a battlefield with 3 Might or less when she becomes Empowered, whether you paid her Empower cost or another card Empowered her.
What does disempower mean?
To disempower a card is to take its Empowered status away. You cannot disempower a card that is not Empowered, so a cost that asks you to disempower a card can be paid only while it is Empowered. Several cards spend their status this way, which turns Empower into a cycle: Empower the card on one turn, spend the status on a later turn, then Empower it again.
Questionable Tome Empowers itself when you exhaust it, and when you disempower it, pay 1 Energy and exhaust it, you draw a card. Since both abilities exhaust the gear, it draws you a card every other turn unless something readies it. Boy Who Shattered Time is the Legend of Ekko in Radiance, the fifth set, with its release on 23 October 2026. The Legend Empowers itself for 1 Energy and an exhaust. When you disempower and exhaust it, the next unit you play that turn costs 2 Energy and one Power less and is killed at the end of the turn.
Your opponent can disempower your cards too. Lacerate disempowers a unit first and then kills it if it has 3 Might or less, so an Empowered Steel Paws drops back to 0 Might and dies.
When is Empower worth paying for?
Empower turns spare runes into a stronger board. A unit with Empower plays as an ordinary unit early in a game and becomes a threat later, when you have more runes than cards to spend them on. Frostcoat Mother and Steel Paws are made for that late stage, while Shadow Fiend and Legion Marauder are cheap enough to Empower early.
The risk is that the cost is lost when the card leaves the board, and an Empowered unit is the first target for removal, so Empower a unit when you mean to use it this turn. Some cards also reward you for having Empowered cards at all: Shock Blast costs 2 Energy less while you control something Empowered.
Most cards with Empower are in Vendetta, units for the most part, with some gear and Legends. The full wording is in rules 442, 443, 827 and 828 of the Core Rules on Riot's Rules Hub.
