What is the Nexus Cup?

The Nexus Cup is a monthly Riftbound tournament at local game stores, new in 2027. It crowns a local champion without leading into the competitive ladder, and it takes over that side of Summoner Skirmish, which Riot retires after the Radiance season.

The Nexus Cup is part of the organized play that Riot planned for Riftbound: the League of Legends trading card game in 2027. It is planned as a monthly tournament that local game stores hold for the players who come to them, and it ends with a local champion. Riot announced it on 4 August 2026, in its State of Play article about organized play in 2027, as one of the two programs that take over from Summoner Skirmish once the Radiance season is over.

The Nexus Cup sits next to the weekly Nexus Night as a monthly event with a local title to win, but it is not meant as a step on the way to Riftbound Regionals and the other big tournaments. Riot's announcement described what the event is for rather than how it is run.

What is the Nexus Cup for?

The Nexus Cup gives a store a regular competition of its own, played for a local title rather than for a place at bigger events. Riot calls Nexus Cups monthly celebrations of local organized play, held outside the Premier Play Ladder, which is Riot's name for its chain of competitive events.

Riot describes the Nexus Cup as a local event aimed at crowning a local champion without driving directly into its competitive structure. A player who wants to be the best player at their own store each month, but has no plans to travel to a Regional, is the kind of player the Nexus Cup suits.

Why did Riot add the Nexus Cup?

Riot added the Nexus Cup because Summoner Skirmish was trying to do two jobs at once. A Summoner Skirmish was meant to be the local championship of a store and also the first step into competitive play, and its prizes included a bye at a Regional Qualifier. Riot found that the events and the Regional Qualifiers had become more popular than it expected, and many of those byes went unused because the players who won them could not get to a Regional Qualifier.

Riot's plan is to retire Summoner Skirmish after the Radiance season and to split its two jobs between two new store programs. The Riftbound Challenge Series will take the competitive job: it is meant as the first rung of the competitive ladder, and it will run at a curated network of stores rather than at every store that holds Riftbound events. The Nexus Cup will take the local job and keep a store championship for the players of each store.

How is the Nexus Cup different from the other store events?

The store events of 2027 differ in how often they come and in what they lead to.

  • Nexus Night is the weekly casual event of the store. Every player who takes part should get a Nexus Night promo pack while the store's supply lasts, and Riot calls Nexus Night the heart of its local organized play.
  • The Nexus Cup will be the monthly store tournament. It will have a local champion at the end, and it will stay outside the competitive ladder.
  • The Riftbound Challenge Series will be the competitive store event. It will be the first step of a ladder that goes on to the Showdown Series, Riftbound Regionals, Riftbound Continentals and the World Championship.

Pre-Rift events, the Sealed events in the week before each new set, stay as well. Riot called them an undeniable success of the first year and said it sees no need to change them.

What did Riot leave open about the Nexus Cup?

Riot's announcement of August 2026 left most of the practical details open. It did not say in which month of 2027 the first Nexus Cups will be played, which format they will use, at which level of the Tournament Rules they will be run, what they will cost to enter, what the champion and the other players will receive, or which stores may hold one. Riot wrote that it chose to share the outline of its plans before the complete picture, with events, qualification and a calendar, was ready. The Tournament Rules of 9 October 2026 do not mention the Nexus Cup either.

On 4 September 2026, when Riot introduced the new PlayRiftbound.com as the home of Riftbound organized play, it named the Nexus Cup as one of the future events the new platform is being built to support. In that announcement Riot also said it would share more about the new programs for stores in an update at the end of October 2026. Until Riot publishes those details, take any format or prize you hear about for a Nexus Cup with care, and check with the store that runs it.

What can you play at a store before the Nexus Cup begins?

Before the Nexus Cup begins in 2027, the store events are those of the Radiance season. Nexus Night runs every week, and the Radiance Pre-Rift events are scheduled for 16 to 22 October 2026, the week before the Radiance release on 23 October 2026.

Summoner Skirmish continues through the Radiance season in two windows, from 9 November to 13 December 2026 and from 14 December 2026 to 17 January 2027, and a store may hold one Skirmish in each window. A Summoner Skirmish is played one on one with Constructed decks in best of three matches, at the Competitive level of the Tournament Rules. Riot said that the Radiance Skirmishes will give no byes and that it will add to their prizes instead. For a player who wants a local title, these last Skirmishes are the closest thing to a Nexus Cup that stores hold in the Radiance season.

Where can you follow what happens next?

The store that runs your Nexus Night is the best place to ask whether it plans to hold Nexus Cups. The event finder shows the Nexus Nights, Pre-Rift events and Summoner Skirmish tournaments near you, and the major events page lists the Pre-Rift weeks and the Skirmish windows together with the big tournaments Riot has announced.

Riot said that its update at the end of October 2026 will follow up its August 2026 State of Play, so the organized play news on PlayRiftbound.com is the place to watch for the format and the dates of the Nexus Cup. A player who has never been to a store event can start at a Nexus Night, and the list of what to bring to your first Riftbound event runs from the legal deck to the entry fee.
