How do 2v2 events work?
At a two-versus-two Riftbound event, teams of two sign up together and play every game against another team in Magma Chamber, sharing one score that runs to 11 points. An event is Constructed, with its own 2v2 banned list, or Sealed, with one pool of eight packs per team.

A two-versus-two event of Riftbound: the League of Legends trading card game is a tournament for teams of two. You and a teammate sign up together, sit down together and play every game at the same table against another team. Each of you plays your own deck, but the two of you share one score, and the team wins or loses as one.
Every game at such an event is a game of Magma Chamber, the team mode of the Core Rules, in which each team plays to 11 points instead of 8. The Tournament Rules on Riot's Rules Hub set out what changes at a 2v2 event in rule 603. An event is played as Constructed, where each player brings a deck, or as Sealed, where the team opens packs at the event. The rule numbers in this article are those of the Core Rules and the Tournament Rules of 9 October 2026, which take effect on 16 October 2026, the first day of the Radiance Pre-Rift events.
How does a team sign up for a 2v2 event?
A team signs up as a pair. The Tournament Rules define a 2v2 team as two players who enter a competition together and play together in a single match, and each player still gives their own registration details (rules 603.1 and 603.2). When they register, the two players say which of them is the A player and which is the B player, because that order decides where they sit and when they take their turns.
A team stays together for the whole event. If one player drops out, the whole team is dropped, and if one player is disqualified, so is the team (rules 603.3 and 603.4). Some events also let a team choose a team name to be displayed.
How are the seats and turns arranged?
Teammates sit next to each other, in the A and B order they registered (rule 603.7). The turns alternate between the teams in a fixed order: the A player of the first team, the A player of the second team, the B player of the first team and the B player of the second team, after which the order starts again. Because teammates sit side by side, the turn passes across the table rather than around it.
A random method decides which team chooses the starting player, and that team picks where in the order play begins. The Core Rules describe Magma Chamber as a single game, but an event may also play its matches over more than one game. In that case the team that lost the previous game chooses who plays first in the next one (rule 603.7.c.1). Before each game, every player may shuffle the decks of one of the two opponents (rule 406.1.f.1).
Which decks may a team bring to 2v2 Constructed?
At a 2v2 Constructed event, each player brings a deck of their own, built by the same rules as for a one-on-one tournament: a Champion Legend, a Main Deck of exactly 40 cards, a Rune Deck of 12 runes and three battlefields. Two limits apply to the team as a whole. Teammates may not play the same Champion Legend, and they may not bring the same battlefields (Core Rules 491.8.h and 491.8.i), so a team settles its two decks together.
Riot keeps a separate banned list for 2v2 Constructed on its Rules Hub. It holds every card and battlefield banned in Standard Constructed, and one card more: Wuju Bladesman, the Legend of Master Yi from Proving Grounds. Wuju Bladesman gives +2 Might to a friendly unit while it defends alone, and in Magma Chamber your teammate's units count as friendly too, so the bonus would cover both decks of the team. Riot gave this reason in its July 2026 ban list update.
The same team rule that led Riot to ban Wuju Bladesman also makes other cards stronger than they are in a Duel. Right of Conquest draws 1 card, then 1 more for each battlefield you or your allies control, and the battlefield Seat of Power draws a card for each other battlefield you or your allies control when you conquer it. The Legend Gloomist can be exhausted to draw a card when you or an ally hold a battlefield, and the Reaction For Demacia! can give your teammate's units at a battlefield Shield 2 for the turn when an opponent attacks them.
How does 2v2 Sealed work?
A 2v2 event can also be played Sealed (rule 603.6). In 2v2 Sealed, the two players of a team share a single pool of eight booster packs, while each player at a one-on-one Sealed event opens six packs of their own. A booster pack holds 14 cards, so a team builds two decks from 112 cards, and each deck follows the usual Sealed rules, with a Main Deck of at least 25 cards.
A card from the pool can go into only one of the two decks, so the real work is sharing the cards out. Sort the pool by domain, see which domains run deepest and give each player different domains, so that the two decks do not compete for the same cards.
A few stores also hold a Pre-Rift event as a 2v2 event. Each player at a Pre-Rift event gets a Pre-Rift kit, and Riot's guide to the Radiance Pre-Rift does not mention 2v2 play, so ask the store before the day how its teams build their decks.
Can teammates talk and show each other their cards?
Yes. At team events the Tournament Rules allow and encourage teammates to talk to each other, as long as the talk does not slow the game down (rule 501.5). In 2v2, teammates may show each other the cards in their hands (rule 502.12), and advice from a teammate does not count as outside assistance (rule 703.9.e). Advice from anyone outside the match still does, so friends who watch the game must keep their thoughts to themselves.
A team also shares responsibility. Teammates have to call a judge when they see a rules violation in each other's play, and letting a teammate's error pass on purpose counts as cheating (rules 204.7.d.1 and 704.8.c). A penalty that gives a player a game loss makes the whole team concede that game (rule 701.2.b).
Where can you play in a 2v2 event?
Two-versus-two is mostly played at stores. Each store chooses the format of its weekly Nexus Night, and Riot's overview of organized play names 2v2 among the games a store can offer there, so some stores hold a 2v2 Nexus Night now and then. Summoner Skirmish, the competitive store event, is played one-on-one, so a 2v2 event is usually a casual evening at a store with a friend. The event finder lists the store events near you, and some stores say 2v2 in the name of a team event.
How should a team prepare for a 2v2 event?
Pick two decks that do different jobs. Your units cannot move to a battlefield that your teammate occupies (Core Rules 449.2.b), so each player usually looks after a battlefield of their own, and a deck that holds well pairs nicely with one that attacks. Keep a Reaction or two for your teammate's fights, since an opponent always plays between your turn and your teammate's.
Play a few games of Magma Chamber at home first, so that the shared score and the order of the turns feel natural. The Proving Grounds starter box holds four ready-made decks with four different Legends and four different battlefields, enough for a first game. The Legends and battlefields pages help a team pick its decks. Each player of the team packs as for any other event, with a deck box, a pen and something to keep the score, as the list of what to bring to your first Riftbound event shows.
