Proving Grounds is the starter box of Riftbound: the League of Legends trading card game, and 24 of the cards inside it form a small set of their own. These cards carry the set code OGS and the numbers 001/024 to 024/024. Riot made them for the four decks of the box, led by Annie, Garen, Lux and Master Yi, and they came out with the box on 31 October 2025, the same day as Origins.
The rest of each deck is made of Origins cards: the runes, most of the units and spells, and the battlefield it plays on. The four decks together hold every one of the 24 Proving Grounds cards, so a single box gives a complete set.
How are the 24 Proving Grounds cards made up?
The set holds four Legends, eight champion units, four signature cards and eight units and spells that belong to no champion. Every card tied to a champion is a Rare or an Epic, and the eight other cards are Commons and Uncommons.
| Kind | Cards | Common | Uncommon | Rare | Epic |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legends | 4 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 0 |
| Champion units | 8 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 4 |
| Signature cards | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 |
| Other units | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Other spells | 6 | 4 | 2 | 0 | 0 |
| All cards | 24 | 5 | 3 | 8 | 8 |
The sixteen cards with a single domain take the numbers 001 to 016, in the order Fury, Calm, Mind, Body, Chaos and Order. The numbers 017 to 024 hold the Legend and the signature card of each champion in pairs, from 017 and 018 for Annie to 023 and 024 for Garen.
Which Legends are in Proving Grounds?
Proving Grounds has four Legends, one for each champion of the box, and all four are Rares. Riot lists each of them with the word Starter after its name, such as Dark Child, Starter.
- Dark Child is the Legend of Annie, in Fury and Chaos. It readies up to two runes at the end of your turn.
- Wuju Bladesman is the Legend of Master Yi, in Calm and Body. It gives a friendly unit +2 Might while that unit defends alone.
- Lady of Luminosity is the Legend of Lux, in Mind and Order. It draws you a card whenever you play a spell that costs 5 or more.
- Might of Demacia is the Legend of Garen, in Body and Order. It draws you two cards when you conquer a battlefield with four or more of your units there.
Of the four champions, only Master Yi also has a Legend in a main set: Wuju Master from Unleashed. Origins, Spiritforged, Unleashed and Vendetta add no new cards for Annie, Garen or Lux, and none of the nine Legends of Radiance, with its release on 23 October 2026, is theirs. The Proving Grounds Legends are therefore the only Legends those three champions have.
Which champion units and signature cards does each champion get?
Each champion has two champion units, one in each domain of its Legend, and one signature card with both domains. One unit is a Rare and the other an Epic, and the signature card is always an Epic.
- Annie. Annie, Fiery makes your spells and abilities deal 1 Bonus Damage, and Annie, Stubborn returns a spell from your trash to your hand when you play her. Her signature card Tibbers is a unit with 7 Might that deals 3 to all units at battlefields when you play it.
- Master Yi. Master Yi, Meditative has +4 Might while you have eight or more runes, and Master Yi, Honed has Ganking and enters ready. His signature card Highlander is a Reaction that saves a friendly unit from dying once that turn and recalls it to your base.
- Lux. Lux, Illuminated gets +3 Might for the turn when you play a spell that costs 5 or more, and Lux, Crownguard can be exhausted to add 2 Energy that pays only for spells. Her signature card Final Spark deals 8 to a unit.
- Garen. Garen, Rugged has Assault 2 and Shield 2, and Garen, Commander gives your other units +1 Might in the same place as him. His signature card Decisive Strike gives your units +2 Might for the turn.
Tibbers is a unit but not a champion unit. The Core Rules, which Riot keeps on its Rules Hub, use it as their example of a card that can never be the chosen champion, even in a deck led by Annie (rule 103.3.a.2).
Which other cards does Proving Grounds hold?
The other eight cards belong to no champion: two units and six spells, each in a single domain. Each of them fits any deck that plays its domain.
- The Fury cards are Incinerate, an Action at 2 Energy that deals 2 to a unit at a battlefield, and Firestorm, which deals 3 to all enemy units at a battlefield.
- The Calm card is Zephyr Sage, a unit with 6 Might and Shield.
- The Body card is Gentlemen's Duel, which gives a friendly unit +3 Might and then has it trade damage with an enemy unit.
- The Chaos card is Flash, a Reaction that moves up to two of your units to base.
- The Order cards are Blast of Power, which kills a unit at a battlefield, Recruit the Vanguard, which plays four Recruit unit tokens with 1 Might, and Vanguard Attendant, a unit with 5 Might that enters ready.
Each of these cards sits in one deck of the box, except Vanguard Attendant, which is in both the Lux deck and the Garen deck because both play Order. The Garen, Lux and Master Yi decks each hold 13 Proving Grounds cards among their 54, and the Annie deck holds 15. The box gives two copies of each champion unit and signature card. A deck may hold three copies of a card (rule 103.3.b), so a player who wants a third copy needs a second box or the single card.
Single cards come from local game stores, from Cardmarket in Europe, from TCGplayer in the United States and from CardTrader on both sides of the ocean. Today a second box sells for $53.13, the Legend Wuju Bladesman for $18.16 and the Common Flash for $3.84.
Where else do Proving Grounds cards turn up?
The cards in the box are plain, not foil, and for their first months the box was the only place to find them. Later printings have changed that.
- Nexus Night promos. In the Spiritforged season of Nexus Night, from February to May 2026, all sixteen Rares and Epics of Proving Grounds came as foil promo cards in the packs given out at store events, such as the promo printing of Wuju Bladesman.
- A special card. Vendetta has a Crystal Rose special card of Lux, Crownguard, numbered SP6/006, which turns up in Vendetta booster packs and plays exactly like the Proving Grounds card.
- The Flash promo. On 31 March 2026, Riot announced a promo printing of Flash, the Common Reaction of the set, for stores to hand out to players from late April 2026. It looks like the regular card with a promo mark at the bottom.
Flash is the only Common or Uncommon of the set with a second printing so far. The second starter box, Proving Grounds, 2nd Edition, is still to come, with its release on 19 February 2027, and Riot has said that it will hold no card that cannot also be found in booster packs.
Can you play Proving Grounds cards outside the box?
Yes. The Tournament Rules count the Proving Grounds cards, under the name of the Origins supplemental set, as part of Standard, the constructed format of organized play (rule 601.3.c.1). None of the 24 is banned in Constructed, while the banned list for 2v2 Constructed holds one of them, the Legend Wuju Bladesman. Two are played with new wording since Riot's errata of 28 October 2025: Dark Child readies up to two runes instead of exactly two, and Highlander heals the unit when it would die.
In deck building, a champion unit or one of the eight other cards can go into any deck whose domains it fits, so Garen, Rugged fits any Body deck. A champion unit can only be the chosen champion, and a signature card can only be played, in a deck whose Legend has the same champion tag. That makes Master Yi the one champion whose Proving Grounds cards also serve a Legend from a main set: a Wuju Master deck, which is Calm and Body as well, can choose Master Yi, Meditative as its chosen champion and play Highlander.
Where can you see all 24 cards?
The Proving Grounds card list shows the 24 cards with their text and prices, and the Proving Grounds page in the products guide shows each deck of the box card for card. A player choosing between the four decks learns what each one plays like in the article on the four Proving Grounds decks, and what else the box holds, such as the figures, the game boards and the booklet, in the article on the Proving Grounds box.
