Which regions of Runeterra appear in Riftbound?

Riftbound cards come from fourteen regions of Runeterra: the thirteen regions of League of Legends, from Demacia and Noxus to Ionia, Zaun and the Void, and Icathia. A unit shows its region as a tag on its type line, but the region does not decide which deck the card can go in.

Riftbound: the League of Legends trading card game is set in Runeterra, the world of League of Legends, and its cards come from every corner of it. Fourteen regions appear on Riftbound cards so far. Thirteen of them are the regions that Riot describes for League of Legends, from Demacia and Noxus to the Shadow Isles and the Void. The fourteenth is Icathia, a lost land that League of Legends does not count as a region of its own.

A card shows its region as a tag on its type line. The region tells you where a unit comes from in the story of Runeterra, but it does not decide which deck a card can go in. In Riftbound, that is the job of the six domains.

Which regions have cards in Riftbound?

Each region below appears as a tag on Riftbound units, and each line names a few of the champions whose cards carry it.

  • Bandle City is the magical home of the yordles, and its champions in Riftbound include Teemo, Lulu and Rumble.
  • Bilgewater is a dangerous port city of smugglers and sea hunters, and Miss Fortune, Gangplank and Pyke come from there.
  • Demacia is a proud kingdom whose capital was founded as a refuge from magic, and Garen, Lux and Fiora fight for it.
  • The Freljord is the frozen north of the warrior tribes, home to Ashe, Tryndamere and Volibear. On the cards the tag reads Freljord.
  • Icathia was a land of the old Shuriman empire, lost when its own mages unleashed the Void. Only Jax and Zilean carry its tag so far.
  • Ionia is an archipelago where the spirit realm lies close to the material world, and it is home to Ahri, Yasuo and Lee Sin.
  • Ixtal is a nation of elemental mages that hides itself in the wilderness, and Qiyana, Rengar and Neeko come from there.
  • Mount Targon is the greatest mountain in Runeterra, and Leona, Diana and Taric carry its tag.
  • Noxus is an empire that grows by conquest, and Darius, Draven and LeBlanc are among its champions.
  • Piltover is a city of trade and invention on the cliffs above Zaun, home to Caitlyn, Jayce and Heimerdinger.
  • The Shadow Isles are a cursed land wrapped in the Black Mist, and Karthus and Vex are the champions that carry their tag so far.
  • Shurima is a fallen empire of the south, raised by the god-warriors of the Ascended Host, and Azir, Sivir and Nasus come from there.
  • The Void is a hungry nothingness from beyond the world, and Kai'Sa, Kha'Zix and Malzahar carry its tag.
  • Zaun is the undercity in the canyons beneath Piltover, home to Jinx, Viktor and Warwick.

A few champions have no region at all. League of Legends ties Bard, Nocturne and Evelynn to no single region, and their Riftbound cards carry their own names but no region tag.

Where does a card show its region?

A card shows its region on the type line, the band just above its name, after the card type and, on a champion unit, the champion's name. Garen, Rugged reads Champion Unit, Garen, Demacia, Elite, and First Mate reads Unit, Bilgewater, Pirate. The Core Rules count regions among the tags of a unit, next to champions, factions and species (rule 143.1). The region belongs to the card, not to the champion, so the cards of one champion can differ: Vi, Destructive and Vi, Peacekeeper are Piltover units, while Vi, Hotheaded from Unleashed is a Zaun unit.

Only units carry a region. Legends carry the name of their champion but no region, and spells, gear, runes and battlefields carry none either, although several battlefields are named after places in Runeterra, such as Zaun Warrens, Targon's Peak and Void Gate. Two tokens carry a region as well: the Sand Soldier token has the Shurima tag and the Tentacle token has the Bilgewater tag (rules 187.3 and 187.10). Some units carry no region, such as Pouty Poro and Stalwart Poro from Origins, whose only tag is Poro.

Does a region decide which deck a card can go in?

No. A Riftbound deck is limited by the two domains of its Legend, and a region tag plays no part in that, so a deck can mix units from any number of regions. A Jinx deck plays Fury and Chaos, so it can put Captain Farron of Noxus, a Fury unit, next to Jinx of Zaun.

The units of one region turn up in every domain. The six Noxus units below cover all six domains, one each: Captain Farron in Fury, Riven in Calm, LeBlanc in Mind, Ambessa in Body, Jae Medarda in Chaos and Darius in Order.

Regions still lean toward some domains. Noxus leans toward Fury, Demacia toward Order and Body, Ionia toward Calm, Piltover toward Mind, and Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles toward Chaos. Players who come from Legends of Runeterra, Riot's digital card game, should note the difference: there, the regions on the cards decide what a deck may hold, while Riftbound gives that job to its domains.

Do any cards care about a card's region?

Very few so far. The Core Rules say that a tag has no rules of its own and matters only when a card or a game action refers to it (rules 143.1.a and 143.1.b), and almost no Riftbound card refers to a region. The List, a gear from Unleashed, is the clearest case. You name a tag as you play it, and its own text gives Demacia as an example. When you exhaust it, it gives a unit with the named tag -2 Might for the turn.

Tokens count as well. Illaoi, Prophet of the Great Kraken and the spell Up from the Deep from Vendetta make Tentacles from Bilgewater, and Royal Guard from Spiritforged makes a Sand Soldier, a Shurima token. A card that names Bilgewater or Shurima counts these tokens like any other unit of that region, so The List with either one named weakens them too.

Which regions have the most cards?

Ionia has more units than any other region in Riftbound, and Noxus comes second. Unleashed and Vendetta lean on Ionia more than on any other region, and the Vendetta Showdown Decks set two Ionian champions, Shen and Zed, against each other. Icathia has the fewest: its only cards so far are two Jax units from Spiritforged, Jax, Unrelenting and Jax, Unmatched, and Zilean, Time Mage from Unleashed.

The card list shows every card of a region when you filter it by tag, such as all the cards of Ionia, Noxus or Icathia. The champions page can show the champions of one region in the same way, such as the champions of Mount Targon.

Will regions matter more in future sets?

They will play a bigger part in Legacy, the sixth set, according to Riot. Legacy has its release on 29 January 2027, and in an announcement of 3 August 2026 Riot described it as a set in which you represent a region through your champion. It is built around six regions: Demacia, Noxus, Ionia, Piltover and Zaun as one, the Freljord and Bilgewater. Riot said that the regions are represented by the champions and the mechanics of the set, but it has not yet shown how a region will appear on the cards, because the first Legacy previews are due in December 2026.

Riot has also said that the eighth set, planned for the third quarter of 2027, takes players to Bandle City, the home of the yordles. Bandle City already has cards in Riftbound, and the card list shows all of them when you filter it by the Bandle City tag.
